Damian's Findings on the Storms and Tides of Xmas / New Year of 2013/14

Firstly:
The numbers I quote are from my own sources unless otherwise stated.

Tidal height measurements are from my own "Tidal Gauge" that I have been fine tuning over the last few years and am now fairly happy that it is correct.

Predicted Heights are from "Easy Tide", part of the UKHO Admiralty Tides.
These heights should not be mixed up with heights for Galway Bay which can be found in most publications.
While there is only a small time difference there can be a metre difference of high tide between Clifden and Galway, on spring tides.

Wind speeds, in the Harbour, are as clocked on my own weather station and are only relevant to the Harbour. There is usually a lot more wind outside the harbour.

On Wednesday 18th December the predicted High Water for Clifden Bay was 4.2m. The weather on the day, in Clifden Harbour, had a barometer reading of 963hPa and the wind in the harbour reached 67mph, from varying southerly directions. The wind did reach 90mph at Mace Head, our nearest official weather station which can be found on XC (www.xcweather.co.uk). All of this put together gave us an actual tidal height which peaked at 5.3m. This had the boats at the pier banging on the top edge of the pier wall.

Friday 3rd January, the predicted High Water for Clifden Bay was 5.0m. The barometer dropped to 961hPa this time and the wind in the harbour reached 63mph, again from varying southerly directions. All of this put together gave us an actual tidal height which peaked at 6.0m. This had the boats at the pier banging on the top edge of the pier wall again, some being washed up on to the pier, with the tide reaching across the pier road.

Monday 6th January, the predicted High Water for Clifden Bay was 4.5m at 08:37hrs. While the barometer did go down to 964hPa the wind wasn't bad, a mere 34mph clocked in the harbour, this gave much less waves on top of the tide. While the waves and sea state looked quite good, compared to the other days, the tide still reached a peak of 5.8m, which had the waves gently lapping the top of the pier wall, intermittently, from 07:45hrs. My best guess, form daylight observations this morning, is that the lowest part of the pier wall (by the slipway) is at the 5.5m mark.
On the other hand, Inish Bofin got another serious hammering this morning.
